Debbie's Sketchbook Goes To The Dogs

...or just one dog, actually. One of the first characters I taught myself to draw was Snoopy. Here are a couple of drawings I've done of "that stupid beagle", as Lucy calls him.

Charles Schulz's "Peanuts" has been one of the more lasting influences on my own artwork, and I've lost track of how many Snoopy drawings I've done over the years.

Happy Birthday To Me

(Trivia: The pattern on Debbie's blanket is a nod to the rabbits that kept showing up in the Sailor Moon manga/anime, while Fluffy's "Piyo Piyo" apron is modeled after the one Kyoko Otonashi often wore in Maison Ikkoku...those are two of my favorite anime/manga series...that I wish I'd hung onto! Oh, well...and Cardcaptor Sakura fans may notice Kero-chan's cameo as an alarm clock!)

One of my favorite "Fluffy and Mervin" cartoons

This came out of a discussion with my brother about whether cartoons were art or not.

Another Fluffy and Mervin Drawing

This one may require a bit of explanation...I have recently been doing a few drawings for the front of the bulletins at church, and I was putting a few finishing touches on my most recent one while the pastor was giving a sermon. He made some sort of a comment about the Devil being small, "an ankle-biter", and that we should just push him aside. The idea of a tiny Devil brought Mervin to mind, so I drew this cartoon above, which has gotten a few chuckles from the pastors and church-goers I showed it to. (This one most likely WON'T be showing up in a church bulletin anytime soon, I'd wager...)

Kiki Drawing (Kiki's Delivery Service)

Hayao Miyazaki's film "Kiki's Delivery Service" is one of my favorite anime films. I drew this picture of Kiki one day when my friends Janet and Denise and Sherry and the kids (and of course, me) were all watching the movie together. I really don't draw in an anime style too often, but I feel that I captured Kiki's expression in this picture fairly well.

Play it again, Sherry!

Here is another picture that I drew for my partner, Sherry. She not only plays piano and drums at church, but she also plays keyboard for a friend's band. (Seems to be a musical theme with the last two drawings...the drumming mice and dancing cat, and now this piano drawing.)

Will The Real Mickey and Minnie Mouse and Felix the Cat Please Stand Up?

Sit down, you three imposters! This is a drawing I did of Felix the Cat and Mickey and Minnie Mouse knock-offs created by the fairly obscure Van Beuren Studio from the films "The Cat's Canary" (fake Felix) and "Toyland Caper" (fake Mickey and Minnie). Both cartoons can be found on numerous public domain cartoon DVDs, including the "Giant 600 Cartoon Collection" that I bought at Wal-Mart.
